A software engineer, who worked at social media giant Yahoo, has
pleaded guilty to hacking the accounts of 6,000 Yahoo users while
searching for sexual photos and videos.
During court proceedings on Monday, 34-year-old Reyes Daniel Ruiz,
who hails from the Northern California city of Tracy, admitted that he
hacked accounts belonging to women that also include his friends and
colleagues.
While highlighting accusations against Ruiz, prosecutors in the case
said, “Once he gained access to Yahoo accounts, he was able to
compromise iCloud, Facebook, Gmail and other online services in search
of private images.”
The former Yahoo employee confessed to storing the explicit material
on a private computer. He also admitted that he destroyed the computer
after his employer raised suspicion over his activity.
Ruiz pleaded guilty to one count of computer intrusion. He faces five years in prison when he’s sentenced February 3.
